REFERRALS 

Sometimes when you visit the GP with a problem, you will need to be referred to a Specialist or Hospital Consultant for further tests or treatment.

You are entitled to ask for a referral for specialist treatment on the NHS. However, whether you will get the referral depends on what your GP feels is clinically necessary in your case.

If you wish to be referred to a specialist in a particular field, such as a surgeon, or a gynaecologist (a specialist in the female reproductive system), you should see the GP you are registered with. This is because all your medical records are held by that practice. Your GP also generally understands your health history and treatments better than anyone and will base any decision for a specialist referral on this knowledge.

Your GP might refer you to see a specialist at a hospital, but sometimes you can see a Specialist that is based in a community setting such as a GP surgery or Primary Care Centre.

Ultrasound Scan
You can have an ultrasound scan done by Mediscan Services - Mediscan hire a room at Lambgates so you can come to your GP surgery to have this test.  You can also choose other locations such as Hyde, Ashton, Stalybridge if those days or times suit you better.  Restrictions do apply so you may be referred to the hospital if you do not meet the criteria.

MRI Scan
If your GP recommends that you have an MRI scan, we refer you to InHealth; who provide MRI services delivered from either mobile or fixed sites.  The nearest centre for our patients is Ashton Primary Care Centre. Restrictions do apply so you may be referred to the hospital if you do not meet the criteria.

Audiology - Hearing Test
You can ask to be referred to Specsavers - Hearing for a hearing test. You can also go to The Hearing Centre (which is based at Glossop Primary Care Centre or Tameside Hospital)

You will need to have your ears checked for wax first - please book a 10 minute appointment with Nurse Clare or Nurse Hilary (Assistant Practitioners). 

If your ears are clear of wax we will send your referral.  If your ears have wax in - you will need to have this treated prior to referral (ask at Reception for more details).

What Happens When You Are Referred to a Specialist

e-Referrals
The NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) combines electronic booking with a choice of place, date and time for first hospital or clinic appointments. Patients can choose their initial hospital or clinic appointment (where available), book it in the GP surgery at the point of referral, or later at home on the phone or online.  This means that patients can choose and time and date that best suits them; which in turn will reduce the number of appointment cancellations and DNA's (did not attend).


When the Doctor advises that you that you need a referral, they should discuss with you how the referral process works.  If they don't book the appointment with you while you are in surgery, they may ask whether you would prefer to have the referral documents emailed to you or whether you would like to collect from Reception.

The e-Referral document will have your Unique Booking Reference Number (UBRN) and Access Code.  It may also have a choice of hospital or provider, and it will also have a website and a telephone number that you can use to book your appointment.  You may not be able to book your appointment without the UBRN and Access Code - so if you have not collected these documents you can contact the surgery to request a re-print or email.
